My Groundhog Neighbor

Neighborhood Groundhog

I have written previously about my sightings of the neighborhood groundhog.

Well, this weekend, I saw him/her again, and happened to have my camera in my purse!  I stopped my car, got out, and got a couple of shots.  This is the best one (and it is also blown up a bit, below).

So here’s my little groundhog ‘buddy.’ (I realize that our ‘friendship’ is one-sided; he/she ran away into the woods after I took this picture and started talking to it in what must have seemed a patronizing – but for my part, purely affectionate – tone).

I think that one of the reasons I may have been seeing him/her out eating so often is that it will soon be time for hibernation. Apparently, these little guys pack on the weight at this time of year, just before going into a deep deep sleep, and then waking up much thinner in about February.

So I’m glad I got this picture of my groundhog buddy before he or she disappears into the burrow for the upcoming cold months.

(Judging by the waddle I saw as the little guy/gal ran away into the woods, I’d say the weight gaining program has been successful.  Way to go, little buddy!)

At German Fest – 2006

Originally uploaded by Koog Family.

I attended a bridal shower this morning.

Then Oma, Paul, Emma and I visited German Fest at the Summer Fest Grounds.

It was a scorcher of a day, but we enjoyed the sights and sounds at America’s largest annual German Festival.

We heard people speaking German. We ate bratwursts and strudels and drank beer.

Oh yes and Cheerios. Emma ate Cheerios.

Yep, an authentic German experience all the way around!

On the train at the zoo

Originally uploaded by Koog Family.

After spending the night at Emma’s Grandma and Grandpa K’s house last evening, we attended my annual work picnic today. This year it was held at the Zoo.

To Emma’s (and my) delight, we rode the train!

Feeding Herself!Originally uploaded by Koog Family.

Among the little Miss’s extensive bag of tricks in her eleventh month are: feeding herself, standing up (including, now, in her crib), and consistently saying Dog and Cat when she sees either the real thing or a picture.

(Well, OK, she says “do…!” and “yiow” [meow]).

Happy 4th of July, Everyone!

Emma is heading into her first 4th of July in grand style in this elegant red & white striped and blue-with-white-stars little bathing number (and a swim diaper).

Playing in the Exersaucer

Paul was out of town on a golf overnight with some friends. So, after we woke up from “morning naptime,” Emma and I had some quality Mom-Daughter time.

Fun! Fun!

At the Plant Nursery

. . . And then headed out for some errands, including to the nursery, where we picked up some plants to plant on the side of the house to fill in for the poor plant souls that didn’t survive the Wisconsin winter.

Emma likes to sit in grocery carts like a “big girl,” now, and has fun in her brightly colored “floppy seat” that has a pocket for her bottle, and loops onto which we can clip a favorite toy (to prevent it from landing on the ground at the mercy of a little girl who likes to see what happens when she drops things).

Some other errands Emma and I ran last weekend were to

the hardware store, the toy store,

and through the car wash.

Cute Weekend

Sunday, March 26th, 2006

It was another busy weekend. But between a little of this and a little of that, we managed to get some cute pictures of our girl.

(These two pictures look really neat side by side, but I coudn’t get them to fit that way on this page)

She is up to some sweet tricks these days. These include:

  • Making eeh-eeh-eeh-eeh sounds like a little monkey
  • Kicking her mobile while laying in her crib, so that she can watch the stuffed bears spin around
  • Making a screechy seal noise (at first I thought she was horribly hoarse, but now I realize she does this noise on purpose)
  • She bit daddy’s nose (when he stuck it into her mouth) with her short little sharp tooth
  • Turning around in her highchair, for no good reason, just after taking a bite of food, and licking the back of the highchair. Of course, this necessitates wiping the food off of the chair before it gets into her hair.
  • Smacking her lips to let us know its bottle time.
  • Pivoting around the floor on her tummy.

She also likes to pull hats off of her head (even hats that fit her properly). The hat she’s wearing (and then about to not be wearing) here is Mommy’s hat.

And bath time is more fun than ever, now that she sits on the ‘big girl’ side and plays with toys! Kicking in the water is fun, too!

Today, for the first time, I noticed after the bath that her toes were “prune-y”! I tried to take a picture of her wrinkled toes, but I learned that our camera functions much better on macro mode when the target stays still – not something we achieved today.

After her bath, she got back to her playing, squealing, and babbling. She’s quite a happy girl!
